Yup, I'm quite hopeful that things will go easier with this one...but I'm wanting to go in fully prepared for anything this time!
With my first, one of the nurses commented that my son had learned to suck on his tongue before he was born, and that contributed to the problems we were having with 'normal' breast feeding. Well, that and reflux and mastitis.
I've got my fingers crossed for this time! I have a medela double electric one. Don't know the name of it but it was darn expensive and comes in a back pack type setup.

I have to say I love it to bits and I've been using it at least twice a day since the girls were born.

This was the brand that was recommended to us by the Multiple Birth club and it's also the brand that was used in the hospital.

How much you spend is directly proportional to how much you intend to express. There's lots of places you can rent them from also.


regarding the latching issues. I had similar problems and started (still am) using nipple shields which made things a lot easier.

Thanks for your replies, I think the Avent Isis Manual is going to be the way to go...for now anyway.

I had problems breast-feeding my first, not for lack of milk...it was a latching on problem, and I'd like to have a pump on hand right from the start as my 'back up' this time...I know the electric pumps are faster and easier, but since I don't know whether or not I'll need it at all yet...it's quite a lot of $ to spend when it could potentially be wasted.
If I end up exclusively express feeding again, then I'll buy the electric at the time. I guess the manual would do the job until then...if I had to do it...? Otherwise I'll probably just use it so that hubby can take a night feed every now and then!

I have an avent and a medela.  The manual medela was a 2 handed thing which was a pia but you can turn it into an electric easily.  That was really good when I was expressing off one side and feeding off the other because my baby encouraged the let down and the pump just had to extract the milk.

Once I went back to work the medela wasn't doing it for me so I got a manual avent and found it heaps better.  I'll probably use my avent next time around.

I have the Avent Manual and it was fine (I guess) but found that is took me too long to express...as if I dint have enoug milk and yet few min later my B/pad would over flow?? I asked this question a couple of years ago and the best advice I had was to price them up and look at rental options and then wait and see what I needed.

I would have bought a manual one, but as I ended up express feeding for 6 months glad I held off and got a medela electric one, from Trade Me I just bought new disposables for the pump.

I use the avent manual and have had no problems with it...but it does depend on frequently you plan on expressing. I ended up using it more than i had originally planned to and in hindsight probably should have got an electronic one (am planning on doing so when we have a second).

I had the manual Avent with Zamara and it worked well - at one point was using it once a day, but usually it was less frequent than that.

I used the single Electric Avent Isis when I had all the feeding issues with K, and it was even better I liked that it had a battery pack so it travelled really well, didn't need to be hooked to mains power etc.

I've got the Avent Isis manual, have had it since I had Maya and I it. Can anyone recommend a particular kind?

I've heard/read that Avent Isis is REALLY good, but then I have a friend who reckons her manual Medela was just as good. I would probably be looking at a manual rather than electric, since I would like to breast-feed normally, but I would also like to have a pump on hand just in case.

Only brand that I know of are Avent and Medela.
