Oh my god, I'm so sorry! There's no feeling worse than feeling your hair starts falling off as a woman. You definitely need more supplements in your life.

Sorry for chiming in to this thread so late, but I used to dread taking showers all the time. Now I don't mind.

This is my story and some of my best advice which I hope is going to be of much help.

I'm a woman in her 50's and I didn't give much thought to my sprouting gray hairs and my hair loss in my 30's during my first pregnancy because they were virtually undetectable; however, as my patch turned into a streak, I began to question whether or not I should address them although it was the last thing I wanted to do...

Should I color them? Should I stick to natural hairstyles where they'd go unnoticed? I was really on the fence, yet I didn't feel particularly rushed to conceal my grays...

I'm glad there are finally solutions out there for doing something about it that actually work!

This is a daily hair growth supplement that quite quickly helped me and my bestie to improve our hair and stop our hair loss with a few important but natural ingredients.

It wasn't until we found it we were able to make our hair stop falling off as fast although it doesn't stop completely!

I finally feel a lot more confident in my hair!

I've read that it is recommended to avoid hair dying before a second trimester. OMG! That is sooooo good to hear that you are allowed to dye your hair. I thought people wouldn't touch you if you were pregnant in case it made your hair go a funny colour because of your hormones. I think that we will always worry about what our actions or inactions whilst pregnant can/could have done. I freak out about getting boozed on at least two occasions before I found out I was pregnant. I worry that my smoking in early pregnancy may have damaged my baby's lungs. Robyn - I can so relate to you worrying about the cleft - when I was preg with Maya I would grit my teeth and force a bowl of cereal and milk down every morning (most mornings threw it straight back up again) coz I figured it was good for the baby. Ok Im NOT saying that dying your hair will cause a cleft or anything else just thats what happened to me put me off dying my hair before 12 weeks. Same thing like with that nose spray that everyone was talking about a few weeks ago, I was told not to take that before 6 weeks and preferably later, used it at about 5weeks 5 days or something and then later found out that my babies had stopped developing at around 6 weeks. I know both these are 99.9% coincidence but I just like to be careful now. I was also told that hair dye is absorbed, which when you think about it makes sense and if it was in any other form such as a drug or spray we would not use those chemicals before 12 weeks. If cough syrup is bad then surely hair dye cant be great either. I just got told off by my midwife for dying my hair, she said its coz it can be absorbed and to not listen to hairdressers?! Ive got an appointment for tomorrow to get some highlights and a trim. Yay!!!! Cant wait. I was hesitant about it because my midwife told me not too but after reading these Im like YAY!!!!! The hairdresser also told me it should be ok.

I think it would be highly unlikely that dying your hair would have caused a cleft - but i can see where you would associate the two - if that's all you can find that may have caused it - there are a lot of things in life like that though - for instance that thing a while ago about immunisation causing autism - theres nothing to it - just the fact that signs of autism seem to start showing in most cases around 15 months - co-incidentaly that's when another lot of immunisations are given -

i knew of girls who were pregnant and working at the hairdressers at the same time,around the chemicals getting there hair done regularly etc and there bubs were fine

Yes but they can also be enviromental, not all clefts are genetic, in fact they say they are not heriditary you just have an increased chance if they are in your family, which in my case they arent so it was more than likely something enviromental and there are some drugs taht are linked to clefts as well as a folic acid deficincy. I know the chances that was the hair dye are next to nothing but its just something that i remembered doing at the time they develope. As it was explained to me once its like throwing a deck of cards in the air and the slim chance they fall the right way for a cleft. Just cant bring myself to dye my hair before 12 weeks now but thats just a hang up I have so dont worry Mrs Frantic

A cleft happens when the two parts of an embryo's face don't join together properly. It is a genetic mutation, and nothing you did or didn't do during pregnancy could have made it occur. I dye my hair when pregnant but also wait till after 12 weeks just to be safe. I reaaaaally need a color atm - am seriously grey. But have decided to wait till after 12 weeks just to be sure. I was really wanting to treat myself to a hair do (cut, style and dye) a few weeks before bubs is due so that Im feeling more feminine and more attractive after giving birth... and especially because I won't have the time (or money) to do so after bubs is born!!

Since we didn't seem able to come to a consensus as to whether this was safe or not, I thought I'd ask on an American forum I frequent where there are a couple of hairdressers amoungst other people, including mums.

One of the hairdressers replied:
Becca, it is perfectly safe to dye your hair when your pregnant. Years ago the colors were lead based, and thats kinda what got the not coloring hair when you're pregnant story started. Now that would be bad for you pregnant or not. So color it up..................

Just thought you'd all like to know! (Now I've got to decide if I want to go red again, or more purple this time.... )
