Where are you from? In Waitakere you can get a car seat for $25 (brand new) through the Trusts and Plunket. We have a safe n sound royale reversible carseat- with tether, I totally recommend it. We used a capsule initially then moved her to this at about 8 months. I would totally recommend using a tether, they make the seat more secure in the event of a crash. The one we have can be used reward facing from newborn to 12kgs- then forward facing until 18kgs. I just went onto childrestraintsafety.com its run by a nz laddy and on there it says



In accordance with the law, child restraints must also be fitted according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Example: If the manufacturer of your child restraint states that it requires you to install your seat with its top tether strap; "This restraint must be attached to a child restraint anchorage point in the car", "Do not use child restraint without upper tether strap attached to anchorage point" (or similar instructions). This is not optional. If you fail to use the upper tether strap, the driver of the vehicle can earn a $150 fine per restraint that is not installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. See Land Transport Rule; Vehicle Equipment 2004; Rule 32017; Part 1; Section 2; 2.9 Child restraints.

Bizzy's right.  Capsules aren't tethered but it's important to use a clip on the seat belt to ensure it doesn't extend in an accident.  Don't worry about seatbelt frays, you'll find when you do your 6mthly WOF you have to remove the carseat completely so that they can check the belts thoroughly and ensure they're still safe.

 

Some forward facing car seats are designed to be tethered to an anchor in your boot but others have an intricate maze which the normal seatbelt passes through to keep them anchored.  It's not a legal requirement to have seats tethered but if the manufacturer recommends it then definitely get it done.

there is a link and some info on another thread, think its in toddlers, about carseats...
capsules dont have to be tethered and i think (but dont quote me) that it is not a legal requirement to have your car seat tethered.

when i had one baby i used the capsule heaps, i would put the whole thing in trolleys when out to save me from carrying it. it just meant i didnt have to wake baby up. Hi

I am looking at carseats at the moment.   We have booked a capsule from Plunket for the first few months - although I am such a weakling I can't see myself carrying it around much, I am more likely to take the baby out of it and use the pram or a sling.

We have a hatch back and a station wagon, so I have been looking at the use of a tether strap. Are they essential?   Does anyone use one?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a really good carseat?
