Yeah she has to do the prick test thing and a whole lot of recording of stuff of charts. I haven't been able to talk to her much as most of the time she is having a rest or attending to her one year old and three year old and if her oldest sons (ages 5 and 7) are home, there's no hope of even trying to get hold of her. I speak to her hubby on the phone when he is home from work and he gives me updates. I spoke to him yesterday, she is doing better this week and is slowly getting used to the new diet routine. hopefully if they have picked it up so early she will be able to get the care she needs. does she have to do the finger prick tests before and after eating?
Big babies are common with GD, Kobe was 7lb 4oz and he was 6 weeks early and addison was 8lb 7oz and she was induced at 38 weeks.

It was picked up quite early because she was feeling very ill. Ive had it with both pregnancies and no you dont have to be in hospital for ages, its just the same as with a normal birth unless the baby has trouble maintaining glucose levels after the birth.
How far along is she? Thanks for that AnnC, that makes me feel a bit better. She didn't have diabetes before and she's never had it with her four previous pregnancies. She doesn't seem to be getting the care she needs in terms of dieticians etc. They live in south Taranaki, I don't know what the midwives are like down there, but she doesn't seem to be happy with hers. She always had a wonderful midwife in Whangarei. I had GD with my thrid baby Rhyley.

I managed to control it with Diet. It was discovered at 28 weeks with the glucose test. Does your friend already have diabetes for it to be picked up this early or had it in previous pregnancies?

I met with the diabetes educator each fortnight and the dietian each fortnight to monotor my levels. I also had a growth scan at 35 weeks (more closer to 36 though) as with GD's it is likely you will have a larger birth baby. I had Rhyley at 39 weeks because of elective ceasar due to breech, they did not give me the option to natural birth him (as some breech can) due to his size.

When he was born the took a heal prick to test his levels and he got the all once over and all clear (apgars 9 then 10) For the next 24 hours they monitored his sugar levels (but not mind only if i choose to) I stayed in hospital 5 days but only cause I had a ceasar so made the most of it (stay in a lovely home maternity unit and was spoilt there with them taking him out of the room at night so I could sleep etc....) I did develope a fever and had to go on antiobiotics on day 2 but sure it was nothing to do with Gd.

After 6 weeks I went to my GP and got the test to see if I had developed diabetes and got the all clear. only thing now is future pregnancies (there won't be one) I will be high risk for GD again. PS. It's also not usual for women with GD to be admitted to hospital prenatally unless it's really severe. It's not neccessary to stay in hospital any longer than normal in most cases. Baby's blood sugars are monitored for the first few hours/days but provided they stabilise postnatal care is as normal. Most women with gestational diabetes find it disappears not long after birth.

She may be having twins as there is a strong history of twins in both sides of the family. ??possibly babies? I dont mean to sound rude but how come she isnt sure how many?no its not necessarily true.. often it can be managed with diet (tried first) and then insulin) they are carefully monitored but not generally in hospital for months though there can be complications..

Hi all, I have some questions about pregnancy diabetes that I have not been able to find answers for and I was hoping that there were some mums out there who can speak from experience in answering them.

I'm not the pregnant one, it's my best friend who's pregnant. She has developed diabetes during her pregnancy. When the baby (possibly babies) is born, she has asked me to be her live in nanny as She has 4 children already and feels she will need extra help. And as I have expereince in early childhood education and care, and have good relationships with all the kids, she thinks I'm the perfect candidate.

I have been told that mums-to-be that have diabetes will need to be in hospital for months. Is this true? Are there many complications with the birth? I have not been able to find many answers so far. I really would like to know, as we live 9 hours apart, so it's not as if I can be there at a moments notice.
