I know how you feel Dagster - i have to go back after 5 months for financial reasons yet i would love ideally to have a year off.

It doesn't really encourage a working ethic does it?? I think paid leave should be 1 year, the first year is the most important for baby, when I think about all the people getting free money and hard workers get bearly anything its really annoying.

Chickoin, you are entitled to paid parental leave (from IRD) as long as you have not resigned from your job. If you are unsure about going back to work apply for as much parental leave as you can get from your job - ie a year, and make the decision to go back or not once your 14 weeks PPL has been paid. If you resign before you get your PPL you are not entitled to it anymore.   If you resign part way through your PPL your entitlements stop from the day you resign.

You do accrue annual leave when you are on parental leave but it is paid at an average of what you earned over the last 52 weeks. So if you took the full 52 weeks and earned $0 then its paid at zero. That is why you should take your annual leave before you go on parental leave. You need to be back at work a full year for it to be paid at your usual payrate. I don't believe you have to pay it back if you don't go back to work because the Government is paying, not your employer. Plus paid maternity leave in the USA seems to vary between zero and 8 weeks depending on the company policy. My friend was talking to a girl in the USA who has just had a baby. They didn't plan to have anymore so they cancelled that part of their insurance. She said in the USA if you have a baby that isn't insured it costs around $25,000 in medical costs

Far out....lets all move to the UK! I know what you mean about NZ entitlements - think we are a bit behind but at least we are finally getting something. not sure about that amber-lee. I know that in the UK you just say you will come back and if you don't the employer may make you pay the money back but at a rate that is affordable.

I am grateful that we do get paid leave at all, but feeling a wee bit bitter because back in the UK you get 26 weeks at 90% of your normal pay, and you continue to get annual leave and public holidays so when you finish your 26 weeks you just go straight back on holiday on full pay for another 3 weeks or so. Got a friend back there who is just about to start this . . .

You actually do accrue annual leave whilst on parental leave, but you accrue it at $0.00. Which basically means, that if you don't either use your entire leave balance or get paid it out before you go on parental leave, when you return and use the annual leave you will get paid at a reduced rate as it has been diluted by the new accrual. Therefore I got mine paid out before I went on leave. Ohh ok now that you've explained it, I get it.

You are doing the same thing as I did. I took two weeks leave from the 17th Aug to the 2nd Sept. My PPL started on the 3rd Sept for 14 weeks.

If there were stat days during your annual leave then yes you would get paid for them.

If those days fall while you are on PPL then no you won't get paid for them, as you are being paid by the IRD.

No you will not get accured annual leave while on PPL. While on parental leave you can't accure annual leave entitement as its speerate to usual leave.

Also on unpaid leave you are not entitled to be paid for public holidays.

Thanks for the advice!

i am entitled to PPL. Basically, i am taking 2 weeks annual leave from 12th Sept to 26th Sept, then the 14 weeks paid parental leave and then the rest as unpaid parental leave until i return to work on 9th Feb.

I apparently have to take the annual leave first.

Oh - and does anyone know if we continue to accrue annual leave entitlement while on parental leave?

Ok I've tried to answer this question about 5 times but keep deleting what I write.

If you are on unpaid leave from your job, to me that would mean that no you wouldn't get paid.

If you were on annual leave, then yes you would.

If you were on paid parental leave, then no you wouldn't.

I think I'm getting confused by the fact that you've stated it's unpaid leave? Are you not entitled to PPL?

I am going to be on unpaid parental leave over christmas / new year.

I am wondering whether i should have the public holidays i.e. xmas and boxing day and 1st and 2nd Jan either paid or as lieu days on my return. Seems unfair that i am not paid for them when if i were at work at the time i would be. Does anyone know?
