I haven't had it done so far in this pregnancy, but I will be soon enough. I wanted to hold off a bit, and keep the visits to the hairdresser (for a dye, anyway) as few and far between as I could, so I'm stretching it out more than I usually would.
I'll probably only get it done twice, maybe three times...the last time being a week or two before I'm due, since I'm sure I won't get much chance for a while after the birth, lol.

As for cost, it's a valid point. For me, though, there were plenty of times in pregnancy (with my first) and after giving birth that I felt gross, uncomfortable and just not 'normal'. Something like having my hair done, getting a facial or whatever made me feel a heap better and could give me a bit of a 'lift', especially in those last few weeks. So for me, it was worth the cost.

That is such a good point! I was going to go to the hairdresser and get foils (mainly to hide my regrowth!) But have been putting it off due to cost. I haven't dyed my hair at all, mainly because of the chemicals being absorbed through the skin. I look really old but I don't care coz I also look really fat

My hairdresser suggested just having foils as the product doesn't touch your skin but to be honest I've far more important things to spend $80 on. $80, thats four MCN's, its half a cot mattress, half a baby monitor etc etc.

Also, if your worried about colouring your hair at home buy the ones that say they are "Amonia" free

I didn't dye mine until I ws 37 weeks and then used an organic dye which I think was probably henna!

I waited until after the first trimester, then used a semi-permanent to darken my hair (as I was in the process of lightening it for summer before I got pregnant, but didn't want to have to deal with re-growth and bleach after I found out) and will probably do the same this trimester. Dont worry, you havent done anything wrong.

Thats good you did it in a well ventilated area, that was the only thing I worried about while colouring my hair, the fumes etc.

Heck i bleached my hair a few months ago! Thanks for all the advice and information. I actually DID dye my hair (and I am only 5.5 weeks pregnant, so I am really hoping I haven't done the wrong thing).

I dyed it in a well ventilated area, so didn't breathe in any fumes, etc.

FYI - When you dye your hair, chemicals from the dye are absorbed through your scalp into your blood stream (remember your skin is the bodies largest organ). What enters your blood stream, enters the babies blood stream. There may not be noticeable effects but if the hair dye used has heavy metals in it, which LEAD is a very common ingredient or was in hair dyes, then you are exposing yourself and your baby to lead poisoning. I say this because I had heavy metal poisoning (lead, aluminum and mercury) and I've been a very unwell chickie for many years. Your child may be fine, the use of many heavy metals, such as lead, is being used less and less (unleaded petrol etc), but if you want to give your baby the best start, I'd have to say that you should check that the chemicals used do not contain heavy metals first. Henna is 100% fine. Heavy metal poisoning is caused by a build up of the toxin in your system, some people will never be exposed to enough for it to make a difference, and others end up like me. My hairdresser will not use permanent dyes if you are pregnant.

Yeap your totally fine to dye your hair

My mum is a hairdresser

Ive coloured my hair a million times this pregnancy lol, Ive even gone from dark brown to blonde, now Im back to bright red!! My baby is all fine and dandy!

There is no proof at all that says colouring your hair can effect a baby.
I dont see how something that goes onto your head can cause harm to a growing fetus.

BUT .....

The only thing most hairdressers will suggest is, waiting un til the second trimester when the baby is fully developed to perm or chemically straighten hair, as the product is MUCH more potent. Colouring is totally fine though from any stage of pregnacy.
