Author: MalibuBarbie
Subject: 14649
Posted: 07 April 2008 at 5:45pm

Hi there Mareed, about the singlets. I have seen some singlets which are cotton lined merino that have an envelope neck and that dome up with three domes between the legs. These, I think by memory come in either a long sleeved or short sleeved style. The beauty of these is that the envelope neck gives you lots of room when putting the singlets on/ off without having to doup / undo the domes unless doing a nappy change. They are great also because they don't ride up like normal singlets without the domes between the legs. Even with Merino I would still be a bit reluctant to put it next to a newborn baby's skin, especially if they are an eczema sufferer. Long sleeved singlets would be warmer but they can be difficult to put on and off. Short sleeved wouldn't be as warm but would be easier to put on/take off and your baby would take longer to grow out of them as you wouldn't have to worry about the sleeves getting too short. The problem with domes is that they are no fun to do up in the middle of the night and that the fabric around the domes usually wears out pretty quick/ tears easily. Also, with the bodysuit style of singlet, the one that domes up between the legs, if your baby gets wet right through from their nappy you can't just change their bottom (or top half if they vomit) ,you have to change their whole outfit in order to get the singlet off as against normal singlets where this isn't a problem.

I hope this helps.

It tells you the temp in baby's room and changes color so it's super easy to tell if the room is too hot/cold. In the winter we used to run an oil fin heater in their room to keep it at the optimum 16-20 degrees, and if the room got too warm/cool we could adjust the heater accordingly.

If you had them in a long sleeve cotton singlet and fluffy stretch in gro in the house (with fire on) then swaddled up in bed (and a jersey/blanket/hat when going out), would that do? I live in Auckland. I'm just cautious about wool cos I had alergies as a kid but merino is pricey given they'll only wear it for a short time.

Im trying to decide whether to have long sleeve cotton with a short sleeve wool singlet on top, or whether to just get a long sleeve merino singlet (as i have heard the "breathe" better and are soft enough to put against the skin without itching etc). Just wondering what others have done or are doing out there with their winter babies?
