Andie- I think I like your idea of trying to sew some singlets for her. as your are right they are soooo expensive (especially for something that you never see any way.. Where abouts would I find merino wool fabric? do normal fabric stores sell it?

Hi there Mareed, about the singlets. I have seen some singlets which are cotton lined merino that have an envelope neck and that dome up with three domes between the legs. These, I think by memory come in either a long sleeved or short sleeved style. The beauty of these is that the envelope neck gives you lots of room when putting the singlets on/ off without having to doup / undo the domes unless doing a nappy change. They are great also because they don't ride up like normal singlets without the domes between the legs. Even with Merino I would still be a bit reluctant to put it next to a newborn baby's skin, especially if they are an eczema sufferer. Long sleeved singlets would be warmer but they can be difficult to put on and off. Short sleeved wouldn't be as warm but would be easier to put on/take off and your baby would take longer to grow out of them as you wouldn't have to worry about the sleeves getting too short. The problem with domes is that they are no fun to do up in the middle of the night and that the fabric around the domes usually wears out pretty quick/ tears easily. Also, with the bodysuit style of singlet, the one that domes up between the legs, if your baby gets wet right through from their nappy you can't just change their bottom (or top half if they vomit) ,you have to change their whole outfit in order to get the singlet off as against normal singlets where this isn't a problem.

I've just been cruising the sites for merino undergarments, sleepwear, etc - and wow them's some pricey clothes!!!  You could try making some?  Seriously, I grabbed a singlet pattern in the store, some merino knit fabric, and now Ella has singlets to keep her cosy all winter at a fraction of the cost of buying any.  They're easy if you make a really basic one - though for a wee baby I imagine ones that dome under the crotch would be much more practical and require more skill to make.  But a kid's undergarments are a good way to practice anyway, 'cause they don't show so it doesn't matter if they turn out a little funny!

Just checked the Mokopuna range and I can only find up to size O???? Ella is quite big for her age, so will probably need a size 1.

Also checked JK and they don't have any singlets or short sleeved tops. Damm.....

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy merino wool singlet bodysuits? Going to dress Ella in the Merino Wool PJ this winter, but wanted to put a merino singlet bodysuit underneath (in case the top rides up and she gets a cold tummy) but can't find them anywhere. Any suggestions???

On a different note- it is pain the no one does a merino all in one sleep suit for 12 months+. If anyone has seen one, could they please let me know......
