Thanks Aimee good to know. I vaguely remember a bit about rice milk at an allergies session I went to with some German professor who was over for a week and Im sure he said althou rice milk is fine if you have allergies it has no nutritional value. DOnt quote me as I obviously wasnt paying that much attention as I only remember bits and piece of what he said  damn wish i have recorded it now.

Soy is fine over 12 months, especially if you know from testing they arent allergic to it, however there is the chance that they could develop an INTOLERANCE to soy as well if allergic to dairy. Han is fine on soy milk, but cant have much soy yoghurt without getting runny poos, so I just dont give it to her much. But in saying that, Kels if you do go onto rice milk you will need to supplement it. I think its protein and fat that there isnt enough of in rice milk for toddlers, but cant remember at this hour of the day!

And Kels, you're still working as a health professional so not too sneaky!

ETA is he on a specialist formula now? cos you can ring 0800 NEOCATE for help with it all, I got better advice of them than off my gp.

He was tested for soya bean and it was negative as with fish but my GP has just left me hanging food/milk wise and just said cont with soya milk and cut all other foods he is allergic too and wait to see paed spec.  Argh dont see them until April. I have a referral to paed dietician that was sent on Friday but I mihgt get proactive and ring the paed myself and see what she says..... Its so easy to pretent I am working at my last job to be able to page her to ring me, sneaky I know but needs must and all.

My dear mother bought us a tin of S26 stuff, so will get it tomorrow night and start weaning him onto it in the next few days.

I'm very worried about telling my m/w - she seems very adamant that I should be b/fing and wasn't happy that I decided to express. Kels if he is allergic to cow's milk you aren't suppose to let them have soy either as they can then get an allergy to that. Its before certain age though so over 12months might be ok, but I would check with your paed or someone to find out more. I know that when I spoke to the dietician/nutricianist at nutricia she said not to give it to Spencer for that reason. Is a pain in the arse cos generally if something is dairy free it has soy in it.

it's funny you all say that about karicare.....we used that with both jack and charli without any problems at all. the times we had to get nurture because karicare was out of stock, when they spilled up, it was the consistency of cottage cheese and really smelled bad

We used to be on Karicare Gold plus and then switched to S-26 gold and have never had probs with either

ETA: in saying that Gina's poos got firmer when we switched to formula but as she was 6 months at that stage it wasn't a huge concern as I could give her pear puree etc to loosen things up if needed

Sachets are a great idea to start with. Generally the Gold formulas are casein dominant so closer to breast milk in formulation and the standard formulas are whey dominant.

I use the Nuture plain (not the gold)...haven't had any issues here with it or the gold. Why don't you start with sachets rather than a whole tin? At least that way you can try them for a couple of feeds and see which one Jackson likes best etc? We found karicare made Daniel so windy he would scream all day long so quickly stopped that.

Nurture and nurture gold make him constipated as hell

We got told that about the S26 as well Becks. That it is the closest to breast milk.
We have just put Sam onto the S26 Formula as she has decided that she no longer wants to B/feed. I have found it to be quite a easy change for her. She loves it and apart from extremely unpleasant nappies it doesn't seem to have given her any problems. I personally stay away from ALL Karicare formulas, all of my kids have got really sick on that one eg: constipation, the runs and it just doesn't agree with them.

Soo Cooper is on Heinz Nuture Gold. It's the more expensive one, but it agrees with him. The normal one gives him constipation.

If you are in Auckland; Nappies for Less on Trafalgar Street, Onehunga sell it for $17.99 per tin, whereas the supermarkets sell it from $18-$22 per tin. Andrew had S26 and we had no problems with it. I was given it to give to him as it is the most like breast milk (well so I was told).

Josh is on Heinz and no problems either, I went with Heinz as at the parent and child show they were the ones most willing to help me out. And I like it as it is quite cheap as well.

I would say try a brand for a week, if he has no issues then stay with it, if he does try a differnet one.

Is S-26 the soy one? if so that isn't recommended unless on the advice of a GP.
Until we found out that Spencer had an allergy to cows milk we were using SMA that always seemed to be about $15 a tin and was quite often on offer at countdown.

You might find that you have to try a few of the main ones as some bubs get constipated/spilly from certain formulas.

I'm going to start switching to formula (will do it over a few weeks and slow down the expressing) as I just can't handle the pain in my boobs anymore (I have boob issues already and them being huge and full of milk certainly doesn't help!)

I've seen that Heinz Nurture is a good cheap formula. I also saw S-26 at the supermarket which looked a good price. Any comments/suggestions or advice? We really don't want to spend more than $15 a tin if we don't have to as its really not in the budget, but I'm just not a good breastfeeder, (take after my mum!) so want to do what's best for me and Jack.
