Hate to tell you this but when I was 11 weeks I finally found a midwife (the 20th one I called after another 20ish or so were vetoed by the midwifery associate lady as they were too busy). I would ring the midwifery school too and the hospital. The hospital would probably just take you anyway if you have no other options. Apparently thats OK - that's what they told me to do, but I finally found a m/w anyway.

Did you not know you were coming back to NZ for the birth? Because some midwives may have taken you knowing that they'd only see you from 30 weeks anyway...

An independant midwife wont cost you anything - maternity care is free unless you choose to go with a private obstetrician. Where are you in the country? You are prob going to struggle to find someone - but best to just sit down with the phone and start calling midwives. The other option is to go with a hospital based midwife or team - contact your local hospital as well.

Good Luck!

I am back in NZ from the UK.
Except being 30 weeks pregnant is apparently a big problem.
I went to see my GP regarding my pregnancy, she told me that it is impossible to get me a midwife now and that i might have to seek private care
She gave me a number for an "independant midwife" and told me to ask her as she wasn't sure what to tell me.
However, what is an independant midwife? and is it costly as i cant afford to pay (being unemployed and all)
and what about check ups and giving birth etc...

any info would be sooo appreciated!
