I second taking measurements. Gates are better than barriers. Barriers, which is what most of the wooden ones are - you have to step over, rather than opening a gate. We have 2 different kinds of metal gates, basically because it was what would fit where we needed them to go - we needed one wide one for the hall & a narrow one for the stairs. Some are narrower than others, some you can buy extensions with to fit wider doors. We need safety gates (3 of them) and I have no idea what a good brand is...

metal? plastic? wood? eek! too many choices!

2 of the gates need to fit our french doors so prob about 1.5 wide and the other is for a normal size door.
