I'm glad you asked this question Sally belly, as I've been trying to decide the same thing. We got our cot off a friend. It's 4 years old and the matress has been used by one child. It's in great condition as it had a dr Sprott cover too. I'm with you Sal, darned military men think that because they live in slum-like conditions that we shouldn't get the best for our children! Sally you should definitley be buying a new mattress. For your peace of mind and your babies health. You just don't know how the last owner treated it.
I notice you are on the Shore. I got a great deal from Kiwibaby in Glenfield for a good quality inner sprung cot mattress. I think it was around $85 from memory. I used the same matteress with all three of my kids. With Rhyley i used a Dr Sproutt cover though and only now am thinking of taking it off. BUT... i was new whennI brought it for #1 so i know exactly where it has been and whats been done with it.
IF... you don't get a new one then use a Dr sproutt cover.
For $100 you have peace of mind though so i would still by a new one.

Good point GandT, I'll try that. Although with him being in the navy & sleeping in a bunk that god knows how many people have slept in before, he is probably not bothered.

Esp with a mattress that you don't know the owner, you don't know where its been or whats happened to it. People do some weird things with mattresses.

MW's strongly recommend a new mattress for numerous reasons!!

Hi there,

I'm hoping that someone can answer my question as I'm having no end of trouble convincing DH that we should probably buy a new mattress for the cot we have bought.

I bought a cot off trademe that came with a good quality innersprung mattress. It has been used by 1 previous child & was used all the time with a Dr Sprott cover. I have heard that it's advisable to use a new mattress with each child but my question is WHY? I need a valid arguement or DH won't have be having a bar of it
