Yep they can, my friend has her boy in disposibles and he gets into them everytime (she has a wonderful mess to clean up).

I've only tried 1 nappy with velcro and Caitlin whipped it off quicker than I could do it up! That's why I switched to cloth! haha

Well, you can make sure you keep a singlet overtop or pants on at all times so they can't get access to the tabs. Or some people tape nappies on. Or put them on backwards.

But yeah, it's not a fun thing to go into your babe's room and find that they've removed their nap and are playing with the contents! Just an aside, if a child gets in to the velcro, wouldn't they be able to open disposables as well, seeing as they're pretty much the same operation just different materials? And then what do you do when you use disposables and a 10-month old can get them off? I've never heard of that before, but definitely something to consider I guess.

Oh yeah, the OSFA thing is definitely OSFM. you can get bubblebubs from mothers instinct in nz now. i have just ordered one and cant wait to see it. We started using MCNs when Kaleb was 6 weeks old. I use pockets and a couple of AIOs. I have some sized pockets but love my OSFA/most nappies and haven't had any problems with them. Velcro/snaps is personal preference - I personally prefer velcro at the moment as Kaleb has chubby legs and some snap systems don't fit too well on the bottom row.
You probably need to try a few out and a hire kit would be a good way to do this. I also know that you can use pockets as covers for prefolds.

I am an ex cloth user... gone back to disposables in the hope my DD will TT. She is over 3 and being so lazy!


I would recommend either MonkeyDoodlez or Bubblebubs.

Bubblebubs are an AIO available from Australia with good postage rates, and MonkeyDoodles are also an AIO which are avalable from several nappy sites. Try www.cherubskiss.com

For overnight I really like the Baby Beehinds. :)

I have to agree with Teresa. We use the Fuzzi's mainly and love them. I do have a couple of drybees with the velcro and they are a pain in the wash. They have a fold over tab that is supposed to stop them from attaching to the other nappies, but it never works!
Plus, my SIL uses the Bum Genius and her little darling (10 months) has figured out how to get them off

I haven't seen a hire kit but they seem good value.

I use FuzziBunz, I really like the pocket system (for easy washing/drying) and the different sizes (less bulk). Also - and I know this is contradictory to someone else's opinion, but it just goes to show how different everyone can be - I don't like velcro because it wears quickly in the wash and some little kids can open it. also you might want to consider just getting prefolds and covers to start with as they need to be changed so much in the beginning. I haven't got a baby yet, but after testing them for how easy they are to put on and value for money, we've decided to go with BumGenius one-size-fits-all (OSFA). Velcro fasteners are so much easier and more sensible than snaps, and some of the snaps on some of them I couldn't get undone! Hi there! I used cloth naps on my daughter pretty much from newborn, but mainly old fashioned type. So this time around I am getting a hire kit for the first 8 weeks, then I will go onto the stash of MCN I have. There are some really good NZ made nappies out there.

I prefer a pocket system (which doesn't always work on a newborn but is good for the majority of the time)

Check out the NZ Nappy Suppliers thread under this board.

A hire kit might be a good idea. That's where you hire a whole bunch of nappies and get to try them for 6 weeks or so. Gives you an opportunity to work through different systems and brands. I'd highly recommend it.
